The energy transition has made natural gas the main electricity price setter in Europe, with gas determining electricity prices for more than 80% of the hours in 2021 in several countries such as Belgium, GB, Greece, Italy, and the Netherlands. Thermal installations such as gas and coal-fired power stations usually determine the price because marginal costs include the price of fuel (like gas or coal) as well as costs for CO2 emission allowances. On the other hand, power stations that produce electricity from renewable sources like wind, water and sun have very low marginal costs. If these producers are in a position to satisfy all or at least a significant proportion of electricity demand, more expensive providers are pushed out of the market – which leads to a fall in electricity prices.

Wenn es genügend erneuerbare Energien gibt, um die Nachfrage zu decken, werden die teureren Erzeuger (Öl, Gas und Kohle) aus dem Markt gedrängt. Dies wird nie geschehen, es sei denn, 2 Dinge:
- Es ist nie Nacht in Europa, so dass Sonne/Wind/Wasser 24/7 funktionieren
- die Erzeuger erneuerbarer Energien verfügen über Speicherkapazitäten, um auch die nächtliche Nachfrage in der gesamten EU zu decken, wodurch der Bedarf an Öl-, Gas- und Kohlestrom in der Nacht/im Winter minimiert wird.
Bis dahin leiden wir alle unter den „marktgesteuerten“ Preisfestsetzungsspielen am nächsten Tag, dem Großhandel und Futures, die (immer noch) von den meisten Produzenten auf Öl-, Gas- und Kohlebasis betrieben werden.
